Xilinx Delivers Fully Programmable Solution for Sonet Backplanes

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX) today announced the availability of its complete, ready-to-use solution for SONET based backplanes using the company's flagship Virtex-II Pro(TM) Platform FPGAs. Building on the customer-tested RocketIO(TM) multi-gigabit serial transceivers, the solution supports data rates of OC-48, OC-192 and beyond. With this solution, system architects now have the ability to create fully programmable backplanes for their systems, while reducing overall design complexity and system costs using the world's leading proven silicon, available today. The company expects its solution to be used in communications and networking equipment such as high-end routers, add-drop multiplexers, and optical cross connects. As outlined in the recently announced "Serial Tsunami" initiative to accelerate and support the broad industry adoption of high-speed serial I/O, the SONET solution is one of many Xilinx serial solutions designed to drive down system costs and keep pace with current and future bandwidth requirements.

"SONET is one of the most widely used connectivity standard in the communications industry; used not only to move data and voice between cities, but also inside optical networking equipment," said Per Holmberg, director of Programmable Systems Marketing at Xilinx. "By providing a flexible, ready-to-use design solution, built on the industry's only platform FPGA with proven 3.125 Gbps serial transceivers, immersed Power PC processors and high-density, high performance FPGA fabric, SONET designers can now benefit from the low-cost and low-risk advantages of programmable systems."

The Xilinx SONET solution is a set of three application notes and reference designs that can be used together or separately to create complete SONET transmitter and receiver sets with bandwidth of 2.48 Gbps (OC-48) per RocketIO(TM) transceiver or more with multiple channel-bonded RocketIO transceivers. The Virtex-II Pro FPGA provides up to twenty-four RocketIO transceivers and there is no limit on the number that can be channel bonded. In addition, the flexibility of the Virtex-II Pro fabric and the RocketIO transceiver enables the designers to create solutions that are appropriate for their systems.

    Availability

The SONET reference designs will be available this month free of charge on the Xilinx Connectivity Central website at www.xilinx.com/connectivity.
